We were invited to attend a special screening of an episode of Maalaala Mo Kaya, organized by the ABS-CBN Foundation at the Shangri-La Mall Cinema last Thursday. We were happy to be joined by our colleagues from the Save Palawan Movement, who came in full force to support this particular episode, which was directed by the award-winning Brillante Mendoza and had, as its centerpiece, the beautiful island of Palawan.

Last Sunday, we loaded the car with our hiking gear (and of course, lots of snacks and drinks) for an afternoon at La Mesa Eco Park, a 33-hectare public park located next to the reservoir that provides drinking water to 12 million residents in Metro Manila. We got there much quicker than I anticipated and — as you will see in the photos that follow — you will be amazed at how quickly the landscape changes from an urban jungle to a real one, just 40 minutes away from Ortigas Center.

After our lunch at the Sabang beachfront, we were whisked off to Ugong Rock, a 23 million year-old limestone formation offering a moderate hike up its jagged crevices (I wouldn’t call it easy) and, upon reaching the top, provides a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding rice fields and hillsides.
We’re also including a bonus video at the end of this post where you will have the privilege of watching Anthony zipline his way down from the rock. Rather gracefully, I must add.

The day we’ve been waiting for has finally arrived! As a perfect conclusion to Save Palawan Movement’s week-long biodiversity caravan, our hosts took us to visit Puerto Princesa’s much-celebrated Underground River, now in the running to be one of the seven new wonders of the world. After the tour and a hearty lunch, we were taken to the 23 million year-old Ugong Rock, which we climbed up then took an exhilerating zip-line down.
